Dr. Claudia Cardenas
Having grown up an immigrant in the USA, I have a keen appreciation for the stress that adapting to a new place can cause. I established AIC to provide support to the hundreds of people that are moving to the great city of Austin from all over the country and from across the world every day. My goal is the help you develop insight about what is troubling you and gain skills to increase your confidence, comfort, happiness and success!
I have a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology and a master’s degree in Professional Psychology, both from William James College in Boston, Massachusetts. During my post-graduate education I trained at various clinics and programs in Massachusetts that provided me with experience in working with children, adolescents and adults from diverse social, economic and cultural backgrounds. My experience, multi-culturalism and fluency in multiple languages led me to focus most of my post-doctoral training in working with immigrant women and children with histories of abuse. Through that work I developed a passion for supporting people who are in transition and who have experienced trauma and/or interpersonal conflict.
After completing my training and working in Massachusetts for several years, in 2012 my husband and I moved to Connecticut where I took on the role of Director of Counseling & EsperanzaCT at the Domestic Violence Crisis Center, one of the largest DV agencies in Connecticut. In that role I was responsible for managing the counseling and Spanish language services at the DVCC. After some years of helping people facing difficult personal circumstances I decided that it was time for a change of perspective and ambiance.
In 2014 I traveled around the world with my husband to experience everything the world has to offer, see its sights, eat its food and meet its people. We visited 30 countries before returning to the US and settling in Austin. Since moving to Austin I have worked for The National Domestic Violence Hotline, Saint Edwards University, Austin Child Guidance Center and the Psychology Center of Austin. Finally, with 13 years of experience under my belt, I decided that it was time to start my own practice in order to provide my clients and partners with all that I have to offer.
